In 1947 Koo In-Hwoi established Lak-Hui Chemical Industrial Corp., the predecessor to today’s LG Industries. While the company’s first focus was on the production of plastics, the company quickly pivoted into electronics by opening Goldstar Co. Ltd., an electronics manufacturer.

Goldstar’s first product was the first ever domestically produced Korean radio. The company then went on the produce televisions, refrigerators, washing machines, and air conditioners in addition to its other successful product lines.

Today LG is an internationally known Korean company with a diverse portfolio of products and expertise. The company doesn’t just produce electronics though. LG is divided into three primary divisions: electronics industries, chemical industries, and telecommunications services. The company was founded by Mr. In-Hwo in part to raise the Korean manufacturing industry to a level that was recognized worldwide. Mr. In-Hwoi’s goal to create an internationally recognized and respected company was well underway by the mid 1960′s and was accomplished by the 1980′s.

From the time of the company’s founding to the present day, a number of significant technological advances helped the company gain traction and compete with similar competitors like fellow Korean electronics company, Samsung. Goldstar renamed itself LG in 1995 to better compete in the important western market. In 1998 LG produced the world’s first 60 inch plasma television set. LG went on to becomes a leading manufacturer of cellular phones, today a major part of its business and probably one of the most recognized product types bearing the LG name.

While LG technically stands for Lucky-Golstar Corporation, recently LG has begun to associate the initials with the slogan, “Life’s Good.” LG entered into a number of agreements with major electronics manufactures in the past decade including the expired LG-Phillips partnership and the current LG and Nortell Networks partnership.
