Dirt Devil

Known for its iconic red casing and forked-tail logo, Dirt Devil has a long history among the many brands of floor cleaning systems.

The genesis of the Dirt Devil brand began in 1905 with the creation of the first Royal vacuum cleaner by the P.A. Geier Company of Cleveland, Ohio. The metal Royal vacuum cleaners were first made by hand in Geier’s backyard garage, but the company quickly grew until it was purchased in 1953 by an investment group, the Walter E. Schott Organization. The investors changed the company name to Royal Appliance Manufacturing and quickly sold it to a group of employees in 1954.

A new group of investors bought the small but thriving Royal in 1981 and launched a campaign to heavily advertise the company’s products and sell them in mass retail outlets instead of small shops. As part of this new approach, Royal introduced the Dirt Devil Hand Vac in 1984. It quickly grew to become the company’s signature product and more than 23 million have been sold. The Dirt Devil line has grown to include upright vacuums, canister vacuums and carpet shampooers as well as central vacuum systems for home, boat and RV.

Today, the Dirt Devil brand operates as part of TTI Floor Care North America and is based in Glenwillow, Ohio. The parent company, consumer products giant TTI, was founded in 1985 and is based in Hong Kong.
