The Dyson, Ltd. Company was founded in 1993 in England by James Dyson. Dyson is best known for its innovative vacuum cleaners but also design and manufacture hand dryers, heaters and bladeless fans.

Dyson prides itself on innovative engineering and finding ways to improve existing products. James Dyson claimed to have tried 5,127 prototypes before creating the first Dyson vacuum cleaner model, the DC01.

Dyson’s motivation to reinvent the vacuum cleaner came after being dissatisfied with a conventional one. He found it clogged too easily and lost suction power over time. One day while visiting a local sawmill, he saw how sawdust was removed from the mill via large industrial cyclone mechanisms, or centripetal separators. These mechanisms are popular in industrial settings, but typically not used in smaller-scale settings due to cost.

However, Dyson was curious to see if the same principles could help improve the traditional vacuum cleaner. He proceeded to create a cardboard cyclone and fitted his old Hoover Junior with it. He found that it picked up far more dust and dirt than with a bag. The first “bagless” vacuum cleaner was invented.

In 1983, Dyson licensed this new vacuum design to a Japanese company called Apex. They launched it as the G-Force and priced it at a premium. It sold very well for Apex.

With the money from his licensing deal, James Dyson went on to open the Dyson Company in 1993 in Wiltshire, England. He continued to improve upon the vacuum cleaner, developing a model with a dual cyclone, constant suction and a transparent container. It became the top-selling vacuum cleaner in England within 10 months.

Many other Dyson vacuum cleaner designs have followed. In 2009, Dyson began creating other products, including the Air Multiplier bladeless fan, the AirBlade hand drier and Dyson Hot, a bladeless fan heater. They currently employs about 3,100 people around the globe, and sells its merchandise in over 50 countries.
